Madonna on Ageism

“Not only does society suffer from racism and sexism but it also suffers from ageism. Once you reach a certain age you’re not allowed to be adventurous, you’re not allowed to be sexual. I mean, is there a rule? Are you supposed to just die?”

Siren Speak – Janelle Monáe

“I really just want to encourage and inspire people to use their freedom in a positive way and in a way that is inspiring to other people. I want to continue to pass down the seeds of change within the world. I think that it can start with just one person. Just like a rumor can get carried on, so can inspiration. I just want to be that person that is always constantly aware of my many gifts and talents. I just want to be able to use them to the best of my ability and to never hold back. It’s up to me to help change the world, I cannot look at everybody else, I can only do what I can do. So, that’s what I want to do with my music, I want to inspire people creatively and artistically to be free.”

Siren Speak – Christina Aguilera

She answered my question! Venus Zine took reader submitted questions to ask Xtina, and guess what! Mine was picked and she answered, hence, some lady wisdom below:

Emily (me): “What advice can you give aspiring female musicians who may not fit the industry’s mold?”

Christina Aguilera: “Don’t settle, and stay true to who you are as an artist. Follow the lead of people you trust, but remember why it is you do what you do.”

In the summer 2010 issue of Venus Zine Magazine.

Siren Speak – Helen Reddy

Helen Reddy on her song “I Am Woman”-

“For a lot of men, thinking about the women’s movement makes them grab their groins. What can I say? I didn’t say that we were going to cut their dicks off or anything, you know? It was just a positive statement of self.”
