Coming Soon- Tribute Band Interviews

Coming soon! Gender and the ‘voice’ of a Song – Part 2 – Tribute bands!

This blog series began a few weeks ago when I had a realization about myself and my all female band in high school. This was a realization that the gendered pronouns used in songs not only denote the gender of the character in a song, but often reveal the gender and sexual orientation of those characters and often then by assumption, the singers of those song themselves. These issues were discussed in Part 1.

In Part 2, I want to take a look at another layer of this dynamic of gender, and sexuality in the song’s narrative. This time, with all-female tribute bands.

New & Improved Youtube

Hi all,

As you may know, Jukebox Heroines has a youtube page. Up until recently, it has been a mess. Well, no more! I have organized all of the favorite videos into playlists highlighting female bands from each decade, and female artists by instrument. Now, if you don’t see your favorite artist/band listed, let me know. The playlists are by no means complete. It has slowly been building from videos posted on this website, and just videos I have watched here and there. So, if you have some ideas, let me know! The list will grow as more women in music are added, rediscovered, and dusted off from the invisible histories of rock.

Chic Mix Playlist – My Teen Years Vol 3

  • Lisa Loeb – I Do
    • I now have cat eye classes like hers. Too rad!
  • The Cardigans – Love Fool
    • They always played this on VH1. Total 90s, I can’t even describe it.
  • Fiona Apple – Criminal
    • Now that I re-watch this video, I am concerned about the whole druggie/heroin vibe. Then again, that was the 90s as well.
  • TLC – Waterfalls
    • Stick to the rivers and lakes you’re used to!
  • Meredith Brooks – Bitch
    • Yes, I am a bitch. It should be my theme.
  • Natalie Imbruglia – Torn
    • This is so how I felt when my heart was broken for the first time.
  • Garbage – Only Happy When It Rains
    • Yea, until I moved to Seattle.
