We’re entering a time of ’90s nostalgia….and that means plenty of Riot Grrrl recapping. You know, Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Team Dresch, Bratmobile, ect. But what about now? Where have all the grrrls gone? Who’s out there raising hell, standing up, refusing to be silent? Where can you find powerful female role models, speaking up for their rights, breaking the mold and doing things outside the box in 2011?
Well, thanks to the magic of tagging on Band Camp, I have found a few artists that I think carry the torch for Grrrls of the 21st Century. I am happy to introduce to you: The Cathy Santonies, QueenBee, Catherine Elms, the ovens, Räuberhöhle, Doll Fight!, Demimonde Slumber Party, and Lipstick Homicide.
Revolution Grrrl Style NOW!
If you can’t see their music players below, that means you don’t have Flash. Just click on their names for direct links to their tunes.

Ainjel Emme releases her sophomore effort “Everyone Is Beautiful.”
Hard Rock guitarist Aingel Emme (Whole Lotta Rosies) channels her inner femme with folk influenced ballads and the longings of a woman’s heart. “Undone” is my favorite track. P.S. If you want to see some cool lyrical art, check out her lyrics page. It’s so riot grrrl.
Zowie – Dance with attitude! Ow!
Australian Electro musician, Zowie takes no prisoners with her pop tunes and dark persona. She’s up and coming fast, with goth-glam and enough hooks to lure any listener in.
Since beginning Jukebox Heroines over a year ago, I receive daily emails in my inbox from PR agencies, publicists, and marketers informing me of the latest new musician sensations. Awesome! Especially if the press releases are actually for female artists. I get tons of these a week, and honestly I do not have the time to review each artist (as much as I would love to!) There are so many amazing women/girls/ladies out there doing such amazing things!
So, in an effort to help those upcoming artists, I will review what I can, but when I cannot, or I am swamped with PR, I will give what I call the PR shout out. This “You Outta Know” segment will give the name and a quick tag line about the musician/band in question. This will at least provide a little bit of press for the artist, and give you, the readers a chance to discover new music. Not too bad I must say!
Therefore, please enjoy the first installment of “You Outta Know” below:
Ana Calvi – Haunting, playful 60s style pop. If you like vintage sounds with fuzzy rock inspiration, look no farther. Reminds me of Grace Slick.
