You’re A Jukebox Heroine – Annie Lockwood

My second featured artist in JH’s new segment “You’re A Jukebox Heroine” is Annie Lockwood from Kenmore, WA.

An acoustic singer-songwriter, Annie’s tunes mix the perfect amount of folk sensibility with throaty longing and conviction. Her vocal style reminds me of Carrie Newcomer mixed with Norah Jones. She uses repetition with her more important  lyrics and I really like that. It highlights the emotion of the songs, much like blues lyrical repetition does. It’s just her and her acoustic guitar, but do not let that fool you. Her songs emote complex feelings and ranges that make any singer-songwriter express their soul. My favorite song is “Maybe 15” which describes the memories of friendship and youth. In reminds me of my own “90s movie soundtracks” “before we woke up all grownup” as the song states. It captures that sense of what was when you were young and sometimes stupid, yet happy in it, before things had to get serious. “The Muzzle Waltz” is a powerful song about female voice backed by light guitar picking. It talks about a girl (What’sHerName) who had her bonds of feminine silence taken away so that now, she can speak, and say what she has wanted to say. The end of the song is left open though. Does she get to speak? Or as the song fades away, it mentions that she has a pretty face. In a way, this is the plight of finding your own voice for many women. You want to speak, but all they want to focus on is your looks.

Overall, Annie Lockwood’s music is full of self-actualization and the complex emotions associated with life. It is truthful, raw, yet full of sparkle. Annie sings with sweet protest and plays with passion.
